Alaskan Brewing Company Selects 2023 Nonprofit Partner
Tasting Room event celebrates 2022 donation to local food bank and welcomes SEADOGS
March 2, 2023 (JUNEAU, Alaska) – Southeast Alaska Food Bank (SEAFB) and Southeast Alaska Dogs Organized for Ground Search (SEADOGS) came together on Tuesday, February 28 at the Alaskan Brewing Company Tasting Room for “Cheers to the Southeast Alaska Food Bank!” which celebrated the SEAFB donation collection for 2022 and passed the torch to SEADOGS.
At the event, Alaskan Brewing Company presented SEAFB Executive Director Chris Schapp with a check for $8,000 to support their mission to provide access to nutritious food for those who are without.
“The SEAFB collects food from our local donor stores on a daily basis. For the months of January and February 2023, we distributed approximately 8,000 more pounds than what we collected in donations. We predict at the end of the fiscal year we will distribute 1/2 a million pounds or more,” said Schapp. “This generous donation from the Alaskan Brew Crew will go toward ensuring that no one in our community will go hungry.”
Alaskan Brewing Company has chosen SEADOGS as the beneficiary of proceeds from its fundraising efforts for 2023. Every year since 2002, Alaskan Brewing has turned to its employees to select a local nonprofit partner.
“I love that our entire local Brew Crew votes for the nonprofit annually and learns about different nonprofits in town. Our crew’s efforts over the years have brought meaningful donations to a great diverse group of nonprofits, and I think all of our crew is proud of that,” said Alaskan Brewing Company Chief Executive Officer Linda Thomas.
SEADOGS’ mission is to train, certify, and deploy qualified search dog teams to assist law enforcement agencies in searching for and recovering lost and missing persons, and educate and promote K9 search and rescue in the community.
Board member and dog handler Mike Pilling has been active with SEADOGS since 1991. Pilling is particularly passionate about the handler-dog dynamic, “It is challenging work, that allows you to act as a detective to find where a missing person would go, and then directing the dog to hopefully find them,” he said.
Past partners include Juneau Mountain Rescue, Hospice and Homecare of Juneau, ANDVSA (Alaska Network on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault), NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), and Juneau Animal Rescue, among others.
