The CODE coordinates coastal cleanup, conservation efforts

JUNEAU, Alaska (August 31, 2018) – Alaskan Brewing’s Coastal CODE (Clean Oceans Depend on Everyone) supports organizations and activities that promote the health of oceans and waterways by providing grants to nonprofits and sponsoring cleanup efforts throughout Alaska and the West Coast.

This year’s cleanup efforts were the organization’s largest yet, joining together with nine partners throughout Alaska and Washington to clear over 1.5 million pounds of trash from waterways and coastal areas. Most of the cleanups were held in the weeks following Earth Day, with one held more recently in Washington.

“We have grown our cleanup efforts substantially over the eleven years since the Coastal CODE program was established,” said Rochelle Lindley, Alaskan Brewing’s Coastal CODE Committee Chair, “and we’re really proud of that. As a company, we place a high value on conservation and environmental stewardship, and this program allows us to expand those commitments and be involved in cleaning our coastlines.”

One percent of Icy Bay IPA sales (one of Alaskan’s best-selling beers) goes toward funding the program, which then issues grant money to organizations and projects that promote cleanup activities or habitat restoration. Coastal CODE has provided over $270,000 of grants to communities since its creation in 2007.

“This year, we have increased our focus on organizing Coastal CODE hosted beach cleanups in Alaska and Washington, and we saw a huge return, with over 1,800 volunteers involved,” remarked Lindley. “It’s very rewarding for us to be able to partner with great local nonprofits that are on the ground every day working to give back.”
