Alaskan Brewing hard seltzer fans have a reason to celebrate this March because they will be able to
purchase full 12-packs of Alaskan Cherry Grapefruit Hard Seltzer.
Fans of Alaskan’s line of hard seltzers regularly complement the product’s flavor complexity and layers,
which can be attributed to the Product Development Team. “We settled on two flavor combinations
early on. We thought they were full flavored with a little more complexity. That was a radical
departure at the time because national brands like Truly and Whiteclaw, only had single flavors,” said
Alaskan Product Development Lead, Dave Wilson.
Bright and fruit-forward, the cherry and grapefruit are perfectly balanced, blending harmoniously with
the Alaskan Sitka Spruce seltzer base for a delightfully sweet sipping experience.
“We tried several cherry combos and none of them seemed to be well-liked, and I said, ‘What about
cherry grapefruit?’ [Brewery engineer] looked at me with a really weird look on his face and said, ‘Well,
that’s a dumb idea. Let’s give it a shot.’ So, we tried grapefruit and that worked out really well. People
liked it! Now, it’s coming out in 12-packs,” said Wilson.
Alaskan Hard Seltzer is brewed much like a beer, substituting fermentable sugar for malt and omitting
the hops. During the fermentation process, the yeast converts sugar into alcohol, resulting in a beverage
that is free of sugar and gluten, and much lower in carbs and calories than beer, coming in at an ABV of
4.5%, 95 calories, and 2 grams of carbs.
In October 2019, the Cherry Grapefruit Hard Seltzer was released alongside the Lemon Lime Hard Seltzer
as a 12-ounce canned six-pack. Alaskan Brewing’s experiment in seltzer grew as more flavors were
released that became available in a variety 12-pack. Now, Alaskans will be able to purchase their
favorite flavor in bulk with the Cherry Grapefruit Seltzer 12-pack.
While layering flavors were new for the seltzer market, it is a part of Alaskan Brewing’s beer
philosophy.
“Our caramel malt in our Alaskan Amber is several different kinds of crystal malts. Also, most of our IPAs
from early on were three, four, or five different kinds of hops. Some breweries have single hops Citra as
well, but early on a lot of the hops were layered differently,” said Wilson. “We use the same philosophy
with the seltzers combining two flavors and then with the spruce. We just have more complexity and
more layers.”
Experts tend to agree with Alaskan Brewing about the seltzer’s complexity of flavors. In 2021 and 2022, Alaskan
Brewing Seltzers took home a total of three Bronze awards and two Silver awards at the U.S. Open Hard
Seltzer Championship.
